Kunena

This forum integrates directly into Joomla CMS system and uses either ready made themes or blends with your Joomla template.

Kunena is installed on this site for use as a forum but mostly for demonstration purposes.

Simple Machines Forum

This is the daddy of free forum software in my opinion, it is a stand alone forum meaning it doesn't require or rely on other CMS software.

It has all the features you could possibly want from a forum including many themes and modifications that are easy to install.

SMF also has Portal Modifications, these turn a forum into a website and are becoming very popular.

Both these forums are free software and I only charge for time taken to install them.

If you have a Joomla site set up by me you get the Kunena option added for free but you have to setup the boards you want.
